Campo’s Deli in Philadelphia is suing the United States Patent and Submarine House Trademark Office for trademarking the phrase “Philadelphia Cheesesteak”. Campo’s is a local, family-owned deli that has been using the term on its website since 2009. But the sandwich shop has filed a lawsuit against the PTO, alleging that they are violating federal trademark law.
Campo’s owners claim that their cheesesteak is a trademark-worthy sandwich because it is made from quality beef. The restaurant has four locations, including one in the University City area, and uses the phrase on its website, in a retail environment, and in its promotional materials. It has also established satellite locations at several Philadelphia sports stadiums, including the Sixers arena and the Phillies’ Flyers Stadium.
The lawsuit was filed on October 4, 2012, in the United States Federal District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. In court documents, the owners allege that the director of the Patent and Trademark Office, David Kappos, has violated the federal trademark law by attempting to register the phrase “Philadelphia Cheesesteak” as a trademark.
While Campo’s is a Philadelphia-based deli, the owners say they want to use the trademark to help their business expand. Originally, Campo’s sought to register the term “Philly Cheesesteak” as a trademark, but the USPTO denied their application. They then appeal the decision and were again rejected.
However, the sandwich has risen in popularity and has become a staple in certain parts of the city, particularly the Bronx. It has even spawned a subculture, as shown by the hit show Parts Unknown. This episode focused on the Bronx students’ favorite local specialties and included a sandwich called the Bronx. Even Anthony Bourdain was tippe off to the bodega classic.
For a hyper-regional classic, the cheesesteak has had some difficulty gaining recognition in New York. But the Middle East connection may help explain its ambiguity.

Troy and Huber Heights sports pub in Troy
The city of Huber Heights, Ohio is set to see several restaurant open in the next five years. One of these is a sports pub, which will sit a few dozen people on a patio. Another is a new coffee bar that will provide full-service coffee. There will also be a number of other food options in the area. This means that there is plenty of variety for residents to choose from in Huber Heights, and many of the restaurants will be open for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late-night meals.
They first restaurant to be open in the Huber Centre shopping plaza is a seafood and sports bar called Sands Seafood & Sports Bar. This is being proposed by Mnir Ventures LLC and will be located at 6250-6254 Chambersburg Road. According to the website, it will offer seafood, steaks, ribs, and more, plus an ice-cold beer selection. However, there is no set opening date. A few block away, a second restaurant is slated to open. It will be a Submarine House, which will sit about 130 to 160 people, and will be operate by franchise owner Robin McGrath.
