Introduction of Foiling:
The GC32 has four hydro-foils. The J-foil is located in the middle of each hull, and the T foil at the stern.A boat that is in foiling mode will be able to reach higher speeds because the reduced drag of the hulls in water is greater than in displacement mode.In foiling mode, the GC32 is capable of reaching speeds up to 45mph (39 knots).
J-foil in foiling:
The primary function of the J-foil, however, is to generate lift. This lift raises the hulls above the water and counteracts the side force created by the sails. It is a self-levelling, ‘J’ shaped foil that prevents the boat stalling once it begins foiling.What is ‘displacement’ mode? The displacement mode is when the boat’s hulls in the water. This is because the hulls move the water.
Self levelling in foiling:
What is’self-levelling?’ The tip of the J-foil gradually lifts up out of the water as the J-foil produces lift. This reduces the amount of lift produced. The J-foil automatically finds the optimal elevation with the correct amount of foil above the water. This feature allows the foil to continue producing lift until it reaches the surface of water. At that point, the boat will stall and fall back onto its hulls.
Pulley system to operate J-fols in Foiling:
The J-foils are operated by sailors with a pulley-system. They have two directions of movement: forward/backward and up/down.The boat is lifted out of the water using only the leeward J foil, while the windward J foil is retracted.
T-foil in foiling:
The T-foil is used to balance out the lift created by the J foil and prevent the boat from tumbling over. The rudders on displacement boats are longer so that even when the boat foils over a metre up in the air, the helm can still control the boat. The rudders on both sides of the boat are linked, so they will move together no matter where the helm is steering from.
Principles use by GC32 in foiling:
- The GC32 uses the same principles as an aeroplane that flies by using its wings to ‘fly above the water’ on its foils.
- Due to the shape of the foil, water moves faster on the top surface compared to the bottom. The faster speed over the foil’s top surface also results in lower pressure, according to physics. Higher pressure on the foil’s bottom surface produces an upward force, which lifts the boat hulls from the water.
- The J-foil acts like an aeroplane’s wing, producing most of the lift. Meanwhile, the T-foil functions like an aeroplane’s tailplane by balancing out the lift produced by the wing.
- The GC32 can foil with a true wind speed of over 8 knots and a boat speed of over 12 knots.
Surf foiling has a rapid progression:

The Wave in foiling:

The traction pads should be placed exactly where you want your feet to be. Duck diving in foiling:
Hold the board as you would a surfboard, and grab the foil’s wingtip using the other hand.Start paddling like you would on a normal board when you are in water up to your chest.Duck diving is surprisingly simple, because the foils will give you extra lift to propel yourself through the waves.
Pop-Up and Ride in foiling:
Start paddling as soon as you see a wave approaching. Continue until you feel like you have caught it. Take-off on a board with foils is similar to surfing.
When you first stand up, press your front foot down, just like when snowboarding. The more steep the wave, the more you will need to lean in front.Installing the traction pads in the correct place means you don’t have to worry about where to place your foot.Early rides will feel different than regular surfing.
To maintain your balance and avoid falling, you’ll want to adopt a squat position while keeping your chest upright and your shoulders open.
Foil Work in Foiling:
The mechanics of foils is easy to understand. Normal surfing and surf foiling:
Never done it before. He invited us to join him so that we could learn together. We all progressed pretty quickly after two or three sessions. Smaller board in foiling:
It’s possible to ride a smaller board. But I would not do it because I prefer something larger and easier to catch waves. The advantage of a small board is when you’re up, the board pumps really well because it’s shorter and doesn’t carry that swing weight. It’s stiff and keeps you going. That makes it easier to ride.
